The software market is highly fragmented. There are many different categories of applications, from the very expensive (such as Logic Studio) to the very inexpensive (such as Photoshop). Software apps for music and audio recording are the same: they are just programs that can be used to do things like record, edit, mix and master sound.
The difference between them lies in the need for different kinds of software. A good music editor is one that can be used for music production (recording, mixing, mastering) and/or songwriting (songwriting/arranging). A good audio recorder is one that can record audio and edit it in a way that makes it accessible both to musicians who want to put their music online and to other people who want to record stuff in their own personal studios.
Most people will use an application designed specifically for these tasks. If they want something more complex than a basic Bluetooth karaoke microphone music editor or recorder, they'll need something much more expensive — but also much more professional. Many songs are recorded on computer but it's not uncommon for people to use some combination of software that's specifically designed for this purpose.
This fragmentation means that being able to make money on software is far harder than it should be — even if you're using a very high-end piece of software like Logic Studio or Ableton Live, you'll still have no idea if your product will work well enough on your computer hardware until you've tried it out yourself and verified it works on multiple devices with different kinds of hardware (e.g., PCs vs Macs vs phones vs tablets vs anything else). In addition, there are lots of other factors at play here: price can have an impact; product quality doesn't have any bearing on customer experience; features can be hard to find; there are so many choices that it's easy to get stuck trying out different versions before choosing one; etc.
