As I was headed back to my office after lunch, I was approached by a young lady in a bright yellow jacket who wanted to talk to me about Gay Rights. She and another woman were soliciting funds on behalf of The Human Rights Campaign to support the organizations efforts to lobby for legal protections for the rights of the LGBTQ community. We had a brief, but pleasant conversation, and I absolutely support the goals of their organization. It was heartening to see them out on a chilly day working hard to stem the ever more frequent attacks that are trying to roll back some of the progress we've made in the last decade towards recognizing that this community deserves the dignity and respect of having their equal rights protected. I wish I could have done more to support their cause (and I will look for opportunities to do so in the future), but just before I left, I passed this coin along for her to share with someone else.
This coin is being registered in memory of my younger daughter, Becky, who was killed in a tragic accident on 30 August 2010. She was an outgoing and loving person, who never met a stranger in her life. She often went out her way to help others and to make them feel special. She would have loved the idea of paying kindness forward and tracking the stories that accumulate along the way. I will be carrying this coin in my pocket, looking for an opportunity to spread some kindness in my daughter's memory.
